Two dairy workers in California's Central Valley have tested positive for the H5 bird flu virus, marking the first human cases of the virus in the state. Both workers experienced mild symptoms, including conjunctivitis, and did not require hospitalization.

Cases this year have been reported in Texas , Michigan , Colorado , Missouri and California . According to the CDC, six of the 16 reported human cases have been linked to exposure to sick or infected dairy cows. Nine bird flu cases had exposure to infected poultry. According to the agency, the virus is widespread in wild birds and has caused ongoing outbreaks among poultry in the U.S. since 2022.
