President Trump's first official phone call of his second term was with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The call aimed to strengthen U.S.-Saudi relations and included discussions on regional stability, economic cooperation, and oil prices.
President Donald Trump initiated his second term by engaging in a phone conversation with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, signaling an intention to rekindle the robust U.S.-Saudi ties cultivated during his first term. According to a White House account released Thursday, the two leaders delved into strategies for bolstering stability in the Middle East, fortifying regional security, and combating terrorism.
Furthermore, they explored the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ambitious international economic plans for the next four years, as well as avenues for enhancing trade and mutual prosperity between the United States and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government's interpretation of the call highlighted the kingdom's commitment to expanding its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, targeting an amount of $600 billion, with the potential to exceed that figure. Addressing the World Economic Forum virtually on Thursday, Trump characterized the crown prince as 'a fantastic guy' and revealed his intention to request Saudi Arabia to elevate this investment in the U.S. to $1 trillion. Trump also articulated his desire for Saudi Arabia and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to collaborate on reducing oil prices, stating, 'You got to bring it down, which, frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t do before the election. That didn’t show a lot of love by them not doing it. I was a little surprised by that.'Trump's initial foreign trip during his first term was to Saudi Arabia, signifying the importance he placed on the relationship. Despite the controversy surrounding the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the U.S. maintained close ties with the Middle Eastern nation throughout his first term. Trump consistently prioritized Saudi Arabia in his foreign policy agenda, vetoing congressional efforts to halt arms sales to the country and to discontinue U.S. military assistance to Saudi Arabia in its conflict in Yemen. Even after the CIA concluded that bin Salman himself had ordered Khashoggi's murder, Trump defended the Saudi government. 'Our intelligence agencies continue to assess all information, but it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event — maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!' Trump asserted at the time. 'That being said, we may never know all the facts surrounding the murder of Mr. Jamal Khashoggi. In any case, our relationship is with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.' While signing executive orders in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump disclosed to reporters that Saudi Arabia was his first foreign destination during his initial term because the country had agreed to purchase $450 billion worth of U.S. products. When questioned about his future travel plans, Trump indicated that if Saudi Arabia desired to purchase an additional $450 billion or $500 billion — or more due to inflation — 'I think I’d probably go there.' However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated to NBC News on Thursday morning that she was unaware of any scheduled trips for Trump to Saudi Arabia
