Floods, droughts and wildfires are notoriously difficult to bargain with.
As they jockey for control of the legislature this November, the state Republican Party is trying to sound reasonable about climate change. According to GOP senate leader Anthony Bucco “We are not climate change deniers,” he claims. They are simply worried about the cost of environmental initiatives like offshore wind and electric vehicle mandates. “It’s just too much, and too fast,” according to Bucco. You know what else is too much too fast? The ocean.
Acknowledging climate change is real is meaningless if you’re not willing to do anything about it. In the many decades since humanity has been made aware that we were poisoning the planet, we have consistently put off any meaningful action to mitigate the damage done. I appreciate Bucco’s attempt to seem like a rational human being, in contrast to his Republican counterparts in Washington, but it’s the result that matters.
For years, ignoring the looming specter of climate change was a rare bipartisan issue with both sides willing to kick the can down the road to maintain a profitable status quo. We’ve wasted any lead time available. If we sprung into action and put all the proposed environmental initiatives into action today, instead of phasing them in over a number of years, we’d still be playing catch up. And yes, there is a cost involved, but it’s nothing compared to the price we’ll have to pay for stalling.
The price of renewables and electric vehicles are dropping, sea level isn’t. The time to invest is now while the money is still dry.
