The newly formed TGL league kicked off its inaugural season with a thrilling match between The Bay Golf Club and the New York Golf Club. The Bay Golf Club emerged victorious, led by a standout performance from Shane Lowry.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy witnessed the inaugural TGL season's opening match on Tuesday. The Bay Golf Club, consisting of Ludvig Åberg, Shane Lowry , and Wyndham Clark, defeated the New York Golf Club, featuring Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Rickie Fowler, 9-2 over 15 holes at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The competition, postponed for a year, faced a brief delay when Lowry forgot a tee for the first shot.
Lowry eventually started the proceedings with a powerful tee shot towards the big screen. The Bay Golf Club dominated early, establishing a 6-0 lead. Lowry secured the victory on the par-five 10th hole against Fowler, making the score 7-1 with five holes remaining. Throughout the event, players were mic'd up, allowing viewers to hear their interactions. Lowry entertained the crowd with humorous remarks, including, “I’m going to be the Scottie Scheffler of indoor golf.” The introduction of players differed from traditional golf, featuring loud music, smoke cannons, and an announcer welcoming them like boxers. Humorous moments continued, such as when Fowler threw the flag onto the green to block Lowry's shot after The Bay Golf Club's victory was assured.
