The San Antonio Spurs celebrate another Rookie of the Month award as Stephon Castle shines in January.
The San Antonio Spurs have a Western Conference Rookie of the Month for the second time in two years and the second time in two decades. Stephon Castle earned the honor for January , averaging 14.9 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 12 games. The fourth overall pick out of Connecticut scored in double figures in nine of those games, including five with at least 20 points, which led all NBA rookies during the month.
Castle, at 20 years old, is the second Spurs player in as many seasons to claim a Rookie of the Month award, following Victor Wembanyama last year. Wembanyama achieved this feat three times last season on his way to being named Rookie of the Year. Prior to last season, the Spurs hadn't had a Rookie of the Month recipient since Beno Udrich in 2005. Castle stands as the only rookie this season with at least 500 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists. He leads all qualified NBA rookies in points per game (12.2), total field goals (203), made free throws (106), and total steals (37), while ranking third in assists per game (3.7) and fourth in steals per game (0.80)
