Unlike Starlink's low-Earth approach, China has launched SkyNet-1 01 into an orbit 12,400 miles (20,000 kilometers) above the Earth.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation has made its first move to compete with Elon Musk ’s Starlink and offer satellite-based internet services globally.

The other provider, OneWeb, has focused on building its constellation first and is expected to begin offering services to customers in June this year. China-based CASC is a late entrant into this space. After the launch of its first satellite, the CASC revealed that, unlike Starlink’s low-Earth approach, it was sending the SkyNet-1 01 to an orbit at 12,400 miles above the Earth.

The CASC plans to test the satellite’s core technologies, such as space-based laser communication and internet access for users based as far as Antarctica and ships in the Western Indian Ocean. However, unlike separate entities operating in space, CASC will team up with other Chinese satellites already in orbit to deliver the global coverage it is promising.
