The hole opened up near milepost 34 along the highway's right shoulder and lane. State crews responded to the incident shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Thursday and continue to evaluate the situation, determine the extent of the damage, and stabilize the area. The cause of the sinkhole has not yet been determined.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, including taking Exit 28/Route 46 eastbound to Route 10/Ledgewood/Lake Hopatcong or Exit 34 to Route 15/Wharton/Dover/Sparta. The eastbound lanes remain closed until further notice
