Aileen Cannon Sets September 8 Start Date After Defense Request

Judge Aileen Cannon released her revised calendar for Routh's trial on Tuesday, setting September 8 as the date for the trial to begin. However, the new timeline still pushes back opening arguments in the U.S. government’s case against Ryan Routh by more than six months. Judge Cannon's schedule comes nearly two weeks after Routh’s attorneys urged her to reschedule the trial and not set a date earlier than December 2025. In her ruling, Cannon found the current Feb.

10 start date did need to be pushed back because of the amount of discovery in the case; however, she described the defense’s suggested timeframe as “excessive given the facts and circumstances.” Routh was accused of lying in wait for 12 hours on the perimeter of Trump International Golf Club on September 15 before a U.S. Secret Service agent spotted a rifle poking through the fence. Routh was accused of fleeing from the scene before he was to charges of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, assaulting a federal officer (a Secret Service Agent), felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number
