Directed by John Ridley, the movie follows trailblazer Shirley Chisolm through the true story of her race to become both the first Black and the first female United States President in 1972.
Critics have praised Shirley on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has secured a 70 percent Tomatometer score and an 80 percent audience score. It marks the fourth fresh movie in a row for King after the success of The Harder They Fall, One Night in Miami, and If Beale Street Could Talk. King has not appeared in a rotten movie since Planes: Fire & Rescue in 2014. It is an impressive streak which has only been extended by her latest movie.
