While $40,000 of the grant will go to preserving the exterior and improving the look of the building, the remaining $10,000 will go to business operations.A spokesperson for AMEX said, “SOCU has faced significant economic challenges, including rising food and labor costs, which have made it difficult to afford necessary renovations and maintain the building’s exterior.
Mobile’s SOCU location has been closed all year. According to the spokesperson for AMEX, SOCU will have a soft reopening Aug. 23 with the grand reopening scheduled for Sept. 12.At the time, SOCU became the first recipient of the RISE grant from Birmingham’s Retention Incentives for Success and Expansion program, to fund an expansion that would include hiring more employees. However, Barrett’s restaurant in the Pizitz Food Hall closed in May 2023 before any incentive payments were carried out.
The RISE Program, established in 2022, doles out grants to local businesses to help with retention, success and expansion. The American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is now in its fourth year, and has reached 125 historic small restaurants to date.
