Young prospect suits up with team for exhibitions with Mariners after getting first taste of United States, spring training
Leodalis De Vries’ first plane ride — a six-hour trip off the Dominican Republic and into Arizona earlier this month — was nerve-wracking, to say the least. The plane ride into San Diego? “Today’s was a little better,” the 17-year-old De Vries said with a laugh through interpreter Danny Sanchez. “I was less afraid today.” The teenage phenom is certainly on sturdier ground, too, after a crash-course introduction to the Padres organization. A switch-hitting shortstop, De Vries signed for $4.
His ramp-up for the season includes action in one of the two Petco Park exhibitions against the Mariners. Go acknowledged that being the last pitcher on the mound for the 2023 KBO season and a truncated spring training in Arizona worked against him as he readied for his year with the Padres. “It would be a lie if it didn't affect me to get ready for the season,” Go said. “This is professional. This is the major leagues, and I'm a professional baseball player too so it's on me.
