Blumenauer’s political career launched in 1973 when he began his first term in the Oregon House at age 24. He would go on to serve as a commissioner in Multnomah County, home to Portland, and on the Portland City Council before being elected to the U.S. House in 1996. Since then, he has represented Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes north and much of southeast Portland as well as western portions of Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge.
In Washington, Blumenauer continued to champion what he describes as “the most efficient form of transportation designed” and used it as a means to bring lawmakers together. He served on the House’s powerful Ways and Means Committee, where he played a role in shaping some of the most significant pieces of legislation passed by Congress in recent years, particularly the bipartisan infrastructure law and the, such as wind and solar power, and the manufacturing of batteries and electric vehicles to quicken the transition away from the oil, coal and gas that largely cause climate change.
