A number of communities across Ohio will receive funding to fight opioid use and overdoses.

The state is distributing the federal funding, part of the fourth round of the State Opioid and Stimulant Response grants, to support local organizations that offer prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and long-term recovery services for Ohioans struggling with an opioid or stimulant use disorder, Gov. Mike DeWine announced.

More than $68.7 million is being awarded to Ohio’s county Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services boards and community-based providers. The local grants are part of $100 million in federal funds the state is distributing. The remaining funds will help cover data collection, measuring the effectiveness of programs and administrative costs, a spokesperson said.OhioGuidestone received two grants totaling $1 million, the largest award in the county.

The sudden drop in overdose deaths in Ohio, which has been one of the states hardest hit by the opioid epidemic, is in line with an unprecedented decline in fatal overdoses nationwide. Between April 2023 and April 2024, reported drug overdose deaths in the U.S. fell by 12.2%,
