The Ohio attorney general warned Columbus City Schools that its refusal to bus some students violates its 'clear legal obligation.'In a cease-and-desist letter
In a cease-and-desist letter to Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman, Dave Yost on Tuesday accused the district of violating state law by choosing not to transport students who live within the district but go tocertain students and notified families. Dr. Chapman said thatCharter school superintendents said the decision is lowering enrolment at their schools.
Families said they were not notified in the proper timeframe that their students would not be included in a CCS bus route. The state's attorney general sided with families, alleging CCS should transport most, if not all, of the students. He also claimed CCS notified families days before the start of the school year instead of 30 days per state law.
"It appears that the District has chosen to ignore its legal obligations to transport thousands of students, perhaps calculating that the District is better off paying future non-compliance fines than meeting its current legal obligations," Yost wrote.Yost warned that his office may sue the district in court for non-compliance.
