The Colts have been surprisingly competitive but now must rely on backup Gardner Minshew II after it was decided that Richardson will undergo shoulder surgery.
Anthony Richardson, left, sits alongside Gardner Minshew II on the Colts' sideline during last Sunday's loss to the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla. This was supposed to be a turn-the-page season for the Indianapolis Colts, with a first-year NFL head coach and a prized rookie quarterback.
“Basically he just felt that the way the shoulder felt, the pain he was having and everything, Anthony felt that was the best road to go … we expect things to go well,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said Wednesday in New York at the completion of a two-day league meeting. “You can say, ‘Well, could he be back for the championship games in late January if you were in them?’ I mean, anything is possible. But it’s unlikely. I would say next year.
