Fans walk into American Airlines Center before Game 4 of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Clippers, Sunday, April 28, 2024, in Dallas. Contributing columnist Rob Curran spoke with fans and employees of the arena and surrounding businesses about the Mavericks and Stars double-playoff runs. It was a stuffy May Thursday on Victory Ave., just off Nowitzki St., in Dallas.
Dashner does not work for the Stars, the Mavs, or the AAC. She works for Ernst & Young down the street but, she told me with a conspiratorial air, she moves in the same circles as a veteran Zamboni driver. So there’s that. Nearby, Rachel Lanford was waiting tables at the aptly named Hero restaurant. The double playoff situation meant the place was thronged almost every night for a week, she said.
“That’s the one thing we don’t get,” said one worker. “We get it on the merch,” he said, nodding at his buddy’s vintage Mavs shirt.
