Toronto’s Auston Matthews leads the NHL with 58 goals this season, and he’s on pace to score 67. That would surpass Alex Ovechkin’s 65 from 2007-08 as the league’s most since the salary cap era began in 2005 and tops overall since Mario Lemieux’s 68 in 1995-96. Ovechkin says he’s rooting for Matthews to pass him and maybe even hit 70.

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews celebrates his goal during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Washington Capitals, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in Washington.

Ovechkin owns the single-season record for goals in the salary cap era, which began in 2005, when he scored 65 in 2007-08. That was after rule changes opened up the game, increased power plays and showcased a generation of talent led by the Capitals winger and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby.Anthony Cirelli scores on overtime breakaway to lift Lightning past Ducks, 3-2Matthews, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon have succeeded Ovechkin and Crosby in those starring roles.

Matthews has scored 60 in a season once and, given the Maple Leafs’ propensity for offense, it would be foolish to rule out a run that gets him to 70 before the playoffs begin.
