The 'use of force incident' occurred Sunday morning east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Officials have released few details.
A person who federal officials described as an 'armed individual' was killed in an encounter with U.S. Border Patrol agents over the weekend, officials said Monday. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. Sunday in a remote location east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, according to a spokesperson with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Members of the Border Patrol’s Special Operations Detachment were conducting an operation when the 'use of force incident' took place, CBP said.
Border Patrol has acknowledged armed robbery activity targeting migrants along the San Diego-Mexico border over the past year. On Feb. 26, the U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens shared photos captured by surveillance technology of armed bandits robbing a group attempting to enter the country. “Yet another example of the dangers these criminals & smugglers pose to the public, the migrants, and our agents,” he said on his X account.
