A man in Utah was rescued after falling through the ice at Stansbury Lake while attempting to save his dog. The incident highlights the dangers of ice during unpredictable weather conditions and the importance of calling for professional help in emergencies.

A man in Utah had a harrowing experience at Stansbury Lake on Saturday night when he fell through the ice while attempting to rescue his dog. Around 11:30 p.m., the North Tooele Fire District received a call about the incident. The man was in the water for approximately 20 minutes before firefighters were able to pull him to safety using a rope. Fortunately, both the man and his dog were treated on the scene and recovered.

Jon Smith, the public information officer for the North Tooele Fire District, emphasized the importance of caution around ice, especially during unpredictable weather conditions. 'If there is any doubt whatsoever, please stay off the ice,' Smith urged. He explained that warmer temperatures and recent rain can create deceptive conditions, making ice appear solid on the surface while hiding dangerously thin areas underneath. 'It’s February. It’s warmer than average temperatures, we also have some rain,' Smith said. 'That can make things very deceptive because the ice may look solid but water on top may not be as thick as the water underneath because of the air temperature and the rain falling melts and then refreezes.' Smith also stressed the importance of calling 911 immediately in case of an ice rescue situation. 'Obviously, the first instinct is to save the pet,' he said. 'But really the proper thing to do in that situation is to call 911. And we’ll come out just as quickly for a pet as we would anybody else.' Kathleen Steadman, a representative for the Utah Drowning Prevention Coalition, echoed Smith's advice. She highlighted the need for at least four inches of ice thickness to support a person safely. However, accurately assessing ice thickness from the shore is extremely difficult, making it essential to avoid venturing onto ice unless professionals have conducted measurements. 'We need it to be at least four inches for it to support a person, but it’s really hard to tell how thick the ice is especially from the shore,' Steadman said. 'So, it’s best to not go on the ice unless there are professionals who have done measurements.' Steadman also shared a valuable reminder from the American Red Cross: 'Think twice before going near cold water or ice.
