The strike was intended to signal to Iran that Israel had the ability to strike inside the country, an official said. No damage was reported to Isfahan nuclear sites.

CAPRI, Italy — Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven major democracies called on Israel and Iran to de-escalate hostilities in the Middle East on Friday following Israel’s retaliatory strikes in central Iran earlier in the day, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said. “The political goal of the G-7 is de-escalation,” Tajani told reporters. Israel provided advance notice to Washington about the strike, Tajani said.

When asked if the United States received a heads-up from Israel, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in a separate news conference: “I’m not going to speak to that except to say the United States has not been involved in any offensive operations.” Blinken added that “what we’re focused on — what the G-7 is focused on, and in our conversations — is our work to de-escalate tensions.
