I encourage the City Council to fully support an unregulated Little Free Library movement in Chicago.
Over the past five years, I’ve spent thousands of hours collaborating with Chicagoans — residents, block clubs, nonprofits, schools — to install the book-sharing stations known as Little Free Libraries in all sorts of neighborhoods. From Austin to Altgeld Gardens, Englewood to Roseland, Pilsen to Pullman, and beyond, the 200-plus “street libraries” my nonprofit has donated bring access to free, diverse books into often-overlooked neighborhoods and disinvested communities.
In light of the bar fight that resulted in the shooting of eight people outside Blum Restaurant & Bar this past weekend, the history of all-to-frequent similar incidents and the ever-growing belief by residents and visitors alike that our city is unsafe, I strongly urge the Illinois Restaurant Association and the City Council to immediately begin work to enact legislation that will eliminate the issuance and renewal of all late-hour liquor licenses.
