Mike Carney, President and CEO of the Outdoor Sportsman Group, enjoyed a unique winter fishing experience on Lake Erie with local kayak fishing expert Chuck Earls.
Mike Carney visits family in the Cleveland area during the Christmas holidays each year, and also hopes to go fishing on Lake Erie , despite winter weather. Last week, a balmy couple of days allowed North Ridgeville kayak fishing expert Chuck Earls to help Carney launch from Sheffield Lake on Lake Erie , and Carney reeled in and netted the day’s best, a 7-pound walleye.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mike Carney grew up in Fairview Park, but has traveled the country during his career in the outdoor media .
Each holiday season he returns home to visit family, and hopefully go fishing on Lake Erie. The temperate weather last week, a precursor to this week’s more seasonable winter weather, included a new walleye fishing experience for the veteran angler. Carney teamed with local kayak fishing expert Chuck Earls of North Ridgeville and launched one of Earls’ kayaks from the Sheffield Lake ramp. Before the day on near-shore Lake Erie waters had ended Carney, the President and CEO of the Outdoor Sportsman Group, the worlds largest outdoor media organization, not only caught a few walleye while fishing from the small craft, but reeled in and single-handedly netted a 7-pound trophy. “I’ve long said that my home waters of Lake Erie provide some of the best fishing in the world,” said Carney. “Kayak fishing in winter, though, was exciting, a really unique outing. Chuck Earls is the best when it comes to kayaking and safety on the water. It was quite an adventure.” Carney had met Earls at an ICAST Show, the annual fishing tackle trade show hosted by the American Sportfishing Association. Earls teaches both kayaking and kayak fishing, which has become popular in Ohio and around the country.Big winds and waves and frigid weather have now slammed the door on fishing around the area, including Lake Erie, the lakes and reservoirs and the steelhead trout streams of Northeastern Ohio. Some ice cover is already forming, but not nearly thick enough yet for supporting an angle
