The Australian driver wished to retire from the sport after racing for Red Bull again. He hoped last year that an impressive show of performance would improve his chances of securing the seat alongside Max Verstappen, especially after considering Sergio Perez's underperformance in the second half of the season, which raised questions about his Red Bull future.
Despite the experience Ricciardo brought to the team, his performance slump sparked doubts about his role at VCARB. He initially believed the team was a stepping stone to Red Bull, but admitted that if it truly felt like a junior team, he wouldn’t be comfortable staying, especially at 35 years old. Marko then highlighted the reason Ricciardo was selected last year, and how his inconsistent performance has closed the doors for him at Red Bull. He added:
