The fundamental concept consists of installing solar panels or other energy-capturing equipment in a location in space where they may continually receive sunlight without being hampered by atmospheric interference or dark hours. Due to the absence of air absorption and weather-related restrictions, solar power systems that are located in space can harvest solar energy far more effectively than solar panels that are located on the ground. However, space solar farms are fraught with setbacks.

“This ultra-low mass solar cell technology could lead to large, low-cost solar power stations deployed in space, bringing clean energy back to Earth – and now we have the first evidence that the technology works reliably in orbit."In order to make the technology work, new solar cells made of cadmium telluride were created by researchers at the University of Swansea's Centre for Solar Energy Research.
