) - Decades after his conviction, an Alabama death row inmate, his family, along with state and local leaders, continue to push for a new trial.
Sunday under the Rotary Trail sign in downtown, Greater Birmingham Ministries held a prayer rally in support of Toforest Johnson and the effort to bring him home. Johnson has been on death row for nearly 30 years for the 1995 murder of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy William Hardy. Johnson maintains his innocence.WBRC spoke to Johnson’s daughter at the rally. She says not being able to physically see him much over the years has been the toughest part.
“It’s very, very tough not being able to have my dad with us. He’s missed so many important milestones in my life, in my siblings life that its always been hard to not have that physical touch. I’m not going to cry but I would love to have that experience,” Akeriya Terry, Johnson’s daughter said. The “Earwitness” podcast by investigative reporter and former WBRC anchor Beth Shelburne dives deep into the case which has gained national attention.
The case focused on the testimony of a single “Earwitness”, a woman who had never met Johnson and never heard him speak but claimed she overheard him talk about the murder on a jailhouse phone call. That Earwitness was paid $5,000 for her testimony.75-year-old grandfather drowns on Dauphin Island helping to save grandsonFEMA contractors ordered to ‘stand down’ after security threats, messages show
