Disney has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first studio to generate over \$5 billion globally in 2024. This success comes despite the recent disappointment of Mufasa: The Lion King, as other releases like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine have driven substantial revenue.
Mere days after becoming the first studio to surpass the \$2 billion mark domestically this year, Disney has achieved an even greater victory by becoming the first studio to generate more than \$5 billion globally. Disney has experienced success across most of its film verticals this year, despite its latest release, Mufasa: The Lion King, falling short of expectations last week. A sequel to the 2019 remake of The Lion King, which grossed over \$1.
6 billion globally, Mufasa: The Lion King managed to generate only around \$122 million worldwide in its opening weekend. However, this was sufficient to push Disney's 2024 total past the \$5 billion milestone. The majority of the studio's global revenue has come from two films: Pixar's Inside Out 2, which earned nearly \$1.7 billion worldwide, and Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine, which made over \$1.3 billion. More recently, Disney's Moana 2 has emerged as another potential billion-dollar contender, having already grossed nearly \$800 million worldwide. Some of Disney's other notable successes this year include two 20th Century Studios titles: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (\$397 million worldwide) and Alien: Romulus (\$350 million). Each of these movies also received positive reviews. This level of commercial success is particularly remarkable considering the post-pandemic era has been unpredictable for mainstream films. Disney is the first studio to surpass the \$5 billion milestone in a calendar year since 2019, marking the sixth time since 2010 that the studio has achieved this feat. Last year proved to be challenging for Disney, with several underperforming films such as Wish, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and The Marvels. What's also evident from this year's lineup of Disney hits is that there's a substantial audience for diverse genres of cinema, as long as it's connected to established intellectual property (IP)
