While the show is a bit long, Berkeley Rep’s “Bulrusher” is a fascinating, complicated piece which is both exceptionally well done and entertaining.

A Pulitzer Prize finalist, “Bulrusher” receives its due at Berkeley Rep with Lawrence E. Moten III’s superb scenic design enhanced by Katherine Freer’s projections and Sherrice Mojgani’s incredible lighting. At one point, Bulrusher goes to the coast to meet her long, lost mother. While they share a tense reunion on an upper-level walkway, Freer creates the ocean with a video projection on the backdrop and Mojgani uses lights to create waves rolling on to the shore on the floor below.

Look no further than Altarena Playhouse’s “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley.” The bookish middle sister Mary is unmarried, tired of practicing the piano and of contemplating her likely spinsterhood. Enter an unexpected guest — Lord DeBourgh , a single friend of Fitzwilliam. Also passionate about books, he and Mary find themselves mutually attracted until another unexpected guest arrives — Lord DeBourgh’s stepsister, Anne DeBourgh .
Director Jacquie Duckworth carefully balances the romantic and comedic elements of the play with the serious topic of inheritance and lack of women’s rights. Fortunately, she also found a group of actors who could explore both elements, adding depth to their characters. Davis’ cast includes Kennedy Joy Fullard , Jennifer Marie Frazier , Erika Coyne , Jas Cook , Sam Topacio and Vinh G. Nguyen .
