The cast of the Downton Abbey movie share their fondest memories of working with Dame Maggie Smith.
Dame Margaret “Maggie” Natalie Smith has passed away at the age of 89 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.The news was revealed early this morning with a statement from her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, which said: “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.
She made her Broadway debut in 1956 as a young twenty-something, portraying several roles in New Faces of ’56. That same year, she made her film debut in Child in the House, which starred Phyllis Calvert, Eric Portman and Stanley Baker.For her role as the titular teacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie , Smith won her first Oscar and her first BAFTA, launching her into international stardom.
