The San Diego County Board of Education on Wednesday officially hired its next superintendent on a three-year, $370,000 annual contract. The board voted unanimously to hire Gloria Ciriza, who is currently the San Diego County Office of Education's assistant superintendent of student services. As of July 1, she will become the first woman to serve as San Diego County schools superintendent in the county office's 76-year history.
Before that, she was principal of Chula Vista's Heritage Elementary School, an associate principal in Poway Unified and a classroom teacher. Ciriza will succeed current county Superintendent Paul Gothold, who announced his retirement in October. He has served as county superintendent for more than six years. “We are so grateful to Dr.
