A photo shared on the Blue Ridge Parkway's social media showed a group of people standing 'dangerously close' to a young black bear, taking photos.

OCT. 21, 2023 - Witness photos of a young black bear encountering visitors at an overlook near Craggy Gardens along the Blue Ridge Parkway. A section of the scenic drive has be closed due to reports of dangerous human and bear interactions. After multiple reports of visitors feeding and attempting to hold a young bear at the Lane Pinnacle Overlook, Blue Ridge Parkway officials in North Carolina are closing an 8-mile section.

“We are closing this section of the road temporarily for the safety of both the bear and park visitors,” said Superintendent Tracy Swartout. “When people intentionally attract bears with trash and food it can lead to very dangerous situations. In this instance, we want to give the bear a chance to lose interest in the area before the situation escalates and visitors or the bear are harmed.”

The Lane Pinnacle Overlook is located at milepost 372.1 and overlooks the southeast Swannanoa Valley. Witnesses to recent close human encounters with a young black bear on the parkway shared photos of the incident on social media. One instance showed a bear at Lane Pinnacle Overlook, approaching a parked motorcycle. A second witness captured a young bear walking around a crowded overlook in the Craggy Gardens area on Oct. 21, 2023.
