President Joe Biden is heading to East Palestine, Ohio, on Friday, a little more than a year after the toxic train derailment.

FILE - A black plume rises over East Palestine, Ohio, as a result of a controlled detonation of a portion of the derailed Norfolk Southern trains, Feb. 6, 2023. President Joe Biden visited East Palestine, Ohio, on Friday, a little more than a year after theThis marks Biden's first visit to the village. The president said his administration is going to hold railway Norfolk Southern accountable for the derailment and aftermath that left nearly everyone involved with concerns.

But the focus seemed to be as much or more on former President Donald Trump; he visited the village a few weeks after the derailment. Some say the president’s visit is far too late, while others say they’ll take all the support they can get. Residents from East Palestine and surrounding areas gathered as early as 7 a.m. to push back on Biden's visit, saying it should’ve happened a year ago.

The village, which sits on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, is still recovering from a massive derailment of the Norfolk Southern freight train on Feb. 3, 2023, which spilled tens of thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding region, on top of other chemicals aerosolized by the fires on the crashed cars.
