Biden ranks behind Trump on economy according to new poll of battleground state voters

The 2024 presidential election is one year from this week and when it comes to the issue most important to voters President Joe Biden has a steep uphill climb.

When asked whether they trust Biden or former President Donald Trump to do a better job on the economy, 59% said Trump and 37% said Biden. When broken down by state, Trump saw the most support in Arizona and Biden fared best in Wisconsin. The margin gets tighter when voters are separated by education and where they live. Trump only had a three-point lead over Biden among voters with a bachelor's degree or higher, and a two-point lead among voters who live in a city.

When asked to rate the nation's current economic conditions, 81% said fair or poor and 19% said good or excellent. Democrats and voters who plan to support Biden in 2024 gave higher marks; 40% and 38%, respectively, said the economy was good or excellent. Just 4% of both Republicans and those who plan to vote for Trump in 2024 rated the economy as good or excellent.

On the question of whether the country is on the right track or headed in the wrong direction, 67% said wrong direction, 22% said right track and 11% didn't know or refused an answer. As with the question on economic conditions, Democrats and Biden supporters were more likely to say the country is on the right track. A total of 88% of Republicans and Trump supporters said the country is headed in the wrong direction.
