Alameda’s Paden Elementary School students T’sharii Rollerson , from left, Avery Wallace and duo Georgia Footman and Beatrice Beltrami participate in a Black History Month poetry slam in February in which they read the works of Black writers. Of the 28 students who read poems, five received awards.

Based on the 2002 film of the same name , this musical focuses on a student who recently moved to Chicago from Kenya and is navigating social dynamics at her high school. Middle and high school events included community gatherings, assemblies and library book displays. Topics related to Black history, culture and achievement should not just be relegated to February, of course, and this year the AUSD Board of Education is hearing a series of presentations on school initiatives supporting African American student achievement.
