U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ross says handgun switches have been a large part of recent violence.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ross of the Middle District of Alabama sees families grieving over gun violence firsthand while prosecuting cases. He claims that past cases in his district serve as a reminder of the importance of combating crime at a national level.

“An individual who was attending a funeral for a loved one who was killed when gun violence broke out,” said Ross. “That person, the person from our district, his picture hangs in the lobby of the ATF headquarters right now as a reminder of the toll of violence.” He’s worked in the attorney’s office for nearly a decade and says the biggest difference since he started is the rise of so-called switches, which attach to a handgun and turn it fully automatic.

A bill that would have addressed switches on Glock handguns passed the Alabama House but died in the Senate in the recent legislative session. Ross is reminding citizens that they’re still illegal under federal law. “Federal law treats the possession of one of these devices, these switches, no differently than it would treat the possession of an unregistered machine gun,” Ross said. “It’s a felony punishable by up to 10 years.”Over a dozen people shot in Montgomery over the weekend, police say
