More than half of all churches in Alabama and the Panhandle disaffiliated over the past several years. Many opposed same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy.

Bishop Jonathan Holston took over on Sept. 1, 2024, as the leader of all United Methodist churches in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Bishop Jonathan Holston, who took office on Sept. 1 as bishop over all United Methodist churches in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, will oversee half as many churches as his predecessors.

The schism “should not stop us from making disciples, should not stop us from evangelizing, should not stop us from seeking to be mission with people all around the world, should not stop us from helping people affected by Hurricane Helene,” Holston said.North Alabama and the Alabama-West Florida conferences previously each had their own bishop. Now Holston is overseeing both as part of the downsizing.

Holston said he is in consultation with conference trustees to figure out how to handle the situation. “In the midst of the pandemic, we had a sense of a loss of civility, how to talk to one another, how to disagree with one another,” Holston said. “If we can talk to one another, I think we can figure this out.”
