Brewbaker served two terms in the Alabama Senate before deciding against running for re-election in 2018. He also served in the Alabama House.So far, the Democratic candidates who have qualified are State Rep. Napoleon Bracy of Prichard, State Rep. Jeremy Gray of Opelika and Willie Lenard.
Democratic State Sen. Kirk Hatcher of Montgomery has announced he intends to run, but he is not listed as having qualified.District 2 is an open seat. That’s because after redistricting, current 2nd District U.S. Rep. Barry Moore is now challenging U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl in District 1. Enterprise is no longer in District 2.
The federal courts redrew Alabama’s Congressional districts in order to give Black Alabamians a greater chance at representation. The newly redrawn 2nd District stretches across south Alabama from the Mississippi border to the Georgia border, encompassing parts of Mobile, all of Montgomery as well as rural areas. Black residents make up 48.7% of the voting age population, making the seat competitive between Democratic and Republican candidates.
