TU CASA offers young adults with cognitive needs a boost toward independence and employment.
Meera Phillips was considered a rock star in the U.S. disability community even before she became well known at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Phillips was born in India with a speech impediment and cognitive impairment. Shunned because of her disability and left on the streets of Delhi, she never knew her birth parents and was adopted in America as a young child from the orphanage that took her in. But in the decade that followed, she made a turnaround with her adopted family in Atlanta.
plans to apply for renewed funding in 2025. It’s one of only three programs of its kind in Texas, recognized through the department’s Comprehensive Transition Program. The others are at Texas A&M University in College Station and the University of North Texas in Denton. As the only CTP-recognized program in an urban county with more than 2 million residents, TU CASA is important, Davis said. “I think we’ve built something beautiful, something very much needed in our community,” she said.
