LABUAN: Labuan’s street art, especially its new murals, have become the targets of vandals.

Barely two weeks after 10 local artists brought shine to the once dull walls of Labuan, at least one of their 13 majestic murals have been defaced.

OCPD Supt Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the city spent about RM80,000 on the mural project to beautify the island in line with the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign.“We do not want such acts to get out of hand with vandals defacing the murals on the buildings, ” he told a press conference yesterday.

“The time has come for a Vandalism Act to be introduced to allow heavier fines and compulsory community service, ” he said. He said although acts of vandalism in Labuan town is not alarming, it needs more stringent laws to put a stop to this problem. — Bernama
