US creates force to protect monuments amid anti-racism protests

The US has formed a task force to protect historic monuments after weeks of anti-racism protests saw statues of slave owners being destroyed or vandalised. – EPA pic, July 1, 2020.

THE US Department of Homeland Security announced a special new task force today to protect historic monuments across the country, some of which have come under attack for glorifying the country’s racist past. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said in a statement that he is positioning “rapid deployment teams” around the country to protect monuments and statues during the July 4th Independence Day holiday.
