Jelas Perdana Menteri, kerana ia akan menentukan hala tuju demokrasi negara, penelitian kepada pelaksanaan ini adalah wajar bagi mengambil kira aspek kebajikan bakal-bakal pengundi diberi keutamaan dan bukannya memberi ruang kepada apa-apa agenda politik.
“Haruslah diingat dengan pelaksanaan pendaftaran pengundi secara automatik akan menyebabkan anggaran seramai 7.8 juta pengundi-pengundi baharu akan didaftarkan sebagai pemilih dalam Daftar Pemilih untuk tempoh lima tahun akan datang,” katanya. Dewan Rakyat hari ini meluluskan Rang Undang-Undang itu dengan mendapatkan sokongan 211 ahli Parlimen sekali gus membolehkan had umur layak mengundi diturunkan kepada 18 tahun daripada 21 tahun sebelum ini.
Sementara itu, tambah Dr. Mahathir lagi, pelaksanaan kesemua pindaan tersebut bukanlah tugas mudah kerana melibatkan kos, masa, penetapan lokaliti dan bahagian pilihan raya yang betul.
