The Indonesian government has disputed a recently published scientific research that claimed the area lost to forest and peatland fires in 2019 was larger than official estimates.

The research, which was published in the Earth System Science Data journal in November, found that 3.1 million hectares were burned in 2019, almost double the 1.6 million hectares reported by the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

In response to the recently published study, the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s head of international cooperation Dida Migfar Ridha said research into forest and peatland fires in Indonesia should be based on data. Dida appeared to be referring to Gaveau’s initial estimates, which projected that 1.64 million ha of forest areas were burned between January and October 2019. Gaveau later revised his estimates to 3.1 million ha.

The data, he added, revealed the scope of challenges the government would have to face if it wanted to reduce forest and peatland fires.
