Umno says Budget will be passed, meeting ends with no talk of Cabinet reshuffle
KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno special supreme council meeting ended in the wee hours of Friday (Oct 30) with a declaration that the party remains committed to the current administration and would ensure that the federal budget is passed in Parliament.
Instead, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that Umno has taken into account the hopes of the people that Budget 2021 includes an extension of the bank loan moratorium, special payments to frontliners, as well as financial aid for unemployed youths and the people amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Umno will ensure that Budget 2021, which benefits the people, is passed," he said.Zahid also confirmed that all Umno ministers will remain committed to the current administration."All members of Cabinet who represent Umno will remain in the government and committed to the people’s welfare," he said.
He said that Umno reiterates that a general election should only be held once the Covid-19 pandemic had eased and was under control, to return the mandate to the rakyat for a stable government.Zahid added that Umno remained committed towards a political ceasefire and national reconciliation to ensure peace and political stability.
“Umno also reiterates in clear terms that it upholds the King and Malay Rulers’ decree of ensuring that the administration of the country is managed well and guided by the rule of law in the spirit of the Constitution, and to not declare a state of emergency in the nation as proposed by the government.
He added that Umno would take action against any party that questions its decision to uphold the King's decree.The four-hour meeting that began Thursday night (Oct 29) came after another supreme council meeting on Oct 26 pledged the party’s continued support of Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional administration, which has been under pressure on several fronts.
Talk of a Cabinet reshuffle had surfaced in recent days after certain party leaders had complained of being sidelined by Muhyiddin.The reshuffle is speculated to have centred on the appointment of a deputy prime minister from Umno.Among the names ventured were deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
