The suspect was sitting on a white pump boat at the Sungat Batu 3 area, when he saw enforcement officials approaching around 5am.
Sandakan marine police commanding officer Deputy Supt Rusdin Banin said the suspect sped off on his boat before jumping into the water.He said officials were not able to locate the man after that. “Upon inspection of the abandoned boat, we found plastic bags with turtle eggs inside, ” he said in a statement here.
DSP Rusdin said there were a total of 1,500 eggs inside the vessel and they believe the eggs were smuggled in from the Philippines. He said the boat was registered under a Filipino number and had been seized together with the eggs for further investigation under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment Act.“All items have been handed over to the Wildlife Department for further action, ” DSP Rusdin said.
