PETALING JAYA: National striker Syafiq Ahmad has credited team work for his sensational hattrick in Malaysia’s 6-0 win over hapless Sri Lanka in a friendly match.

The 24-year-old was on target in the ninth, 76th and 89th minutes while Malaysia’s other goals were scored by Shahrul Saad , Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Mohd Akhyar Abdul Rashid to complete the rout at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

“It’s good that we played well, this win is a timely motivation for us before we play Vietnam next, ” said the Kedahan after pulling off his first hattrick for the national team. Syafiq is currently the national team’s leading scorer, with five goals in their last three matches. That’s impressive, considering he had just come back from a knee injury picked up in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup-2023 Asian Cup playoff round against Timor Leste on June 7.
