The government should subsidise public transportation as 70 per cent of Malaysians use it.

Economist Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram has urged the government to subsidise public transport instead of giving fuel subsidies, as it would help the masses who depend on it.

He told reporters this when asked to comment on the government’s move to remove the existing petrol subsidy mechanism, and gradually float the RON95 petrol price in Peninsular Malaysia, starting Jan 1, 2020. “The Malaysian government has been trying to reduce this subsidy. Fuel subsidies in all countries are basically benefiting the middle class rather than the low income group,” he said, adding that Malaysia is one of the countries with the highest car ownership in the world.

Asked on the government’s proposal to liberalise the energy sector, he said the government is committed towards boosting the use of renewable energy and that should be the priority.

We urge govt please do not abolish petrol subsidy for all rakyat

What about the rural folks prof?

An ideal n practical suggestion.

Prof when are we getting out of this subsidi mentality?

We need to move away from fuel subsidies. The prices should be set according to the market and with free competition by all the players. The market to be monitored by MyCC

RaymondRahman True. First of all no need to segregate population into B40 etc...help for the needy- should just make use of current facilities and improve them- eg Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat, Baitulmal etc. pengurusan hal2 B40 is actually increase expanses (belanja mengurus)

The voice of reason. Council of elders. Yet the govt keep shooting its foot. Listen lh to him once a while. All want to be heroes only.

mohdkautharr You're starting to make a lot of sense now. We need more ideas (and implementations) of this quality please.

MadiAzmadi Good for urban, but not fair for rural. Most of rural areas are not well connected yet compare to city. They depend on petrol and diesel for bike, car, boats, lorries etc. That will create bigger disparity. He should know that.

A brilliant suggestion. Then again, if the government (past & present) were to listen to intelligent people, the country wouldn't be where it is now.

finally....!

Oil is business. Good business....

Hmm..never thought of this idea out of the box?..By subsidising public transport ..U reduce traffic congestion..accidents and pollution( both air n noise)..This his why we need experienced and practical economist..Not the ones basking in their theoretical world..chedetofficial

First of all ensure efficiency in public transportation
