GEORGE TOWN: Repairs to the power cable across Penang Bridge has been shortened by a week, thanks to the speedy work of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

"We shortened the time it took to remove the damaged cable and cable support by seven days," said TNB chief grid officer Datuk Husaini Husin.

He said repairs to the 132kV cable that caught fire in KM3.2 of the bridge involved the replacement of three circuit cables with new ones for a length of about 100m.“These works will not obstruct traffic and will be carried out by sea by using a barge until June 23," he said. On Feb 22, a fire which broke out below the bridge during peak hours, caused a massive gridlock on the bridge on both sides for several hours.

The fire involved a 132kV cable from the main entrance sub-station at Bukit Tengah on the mainland to Bayan Mutiara on the island. Husaini said based on the Fire and Services Department reports on Friday , the fire broke out due to an electrical arc near a wooden platform at KM3.2.
