Six including three women have been arrested in Sibu for possession of 44.945kg of swiftlet nest worth RM134,895.

Region 5 marine police chief Asst Comm Zulfikar Mohd Ghazali, said the six suspects were detained as they did not have the permit or licence from Sarawak Forestry Corporation to operate a swiftlet nest business.

He said that acting on a tip-off, two marine police officers and 10 from SFC had on Sept 18 conducted a surprise raid as part of Ops Khazanah on a house in Jalan Blacksmith.A man and three women, all locals, aged between 28 and 41 were arrested. Their arrest led the team to a house in Permai Barat that was used for the processing of bird’s nest. The suspects, he said, were alleged to have committed the offence under the Wildlife Protection Act 1988.

ACP Zulfikar said intra-agency operations with Sarawak Forestry Corporation were constantly carried out to enforce the law. —
