For a man who had paved the way for cycling to develop in the country several decades ago, it was a proud moment.

Azizul’s gold-medal dream was dashed by Britain’s Jason Kenny who made a solo-attack to race to his seventh Olympics gold but the Pocket Rocketman still stood proud on the podium as the first Malaysian to win a silver medal in cycling for the country.

“I certainly feel proud of him. It’s great that Azizul has continued to put Malaysia on the world map with his tremendous achievement in cycling,” said Shaharuddin, the man who revived the dwindling fortune of Malaysian cycling in 1970 with just RM44.60 left in the MNCF coffers.“I thought the gold could be his. He was too concerned about the Holland rider, knowing that he’s a good sprinter. Kenny caught everyone off guard and his tactic worked.

While happy to see the gigantic improvement in keirin in the country with the emergence of the stars like Azizul, Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Josiah Ng, Shaharuddin revealed an interesting fact that a proposal to introduce the event in 1980s was shot down. Although it was created in 1948 in Japan, keirin never made it to the Olympics programme until Sydney 2000.
