KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government is ready to return the management of Sipadan Island back to Sabah, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie ApdalThe island is under the management of the National Security Council after the International Court of Justice awarded territorial ownership to Malaysia in 2002 following a dispute with Indonesia.
The island was made into a Sabah Parks Marine Park Area in 2005 under the authority of the National Security Council after the Federal Government put it under the Protected Places and Protected Areas Act 1959. Shafie said that the issue of Sipadan was brought up during several discussions with the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when he chaired the Special Cabinet Committee on the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
"I had made the request in several meetings, and Dr Mahathir agreed," he told reporters after meeting with Japanese investors proposing to develop an eco-friendly resort on Pulau Sulug and an organic poultry farm in Sabah here on Monday . Shafie said that he expected the Cabinet to discuss the matter further and eventually hand over the management of the island to Sabah.
