Working from home may be convenient but it certainly does not save electricity.

In fact, most people who are working from home are incurring higher electricity bills which in turn will increase their monthly household expenses.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad Penang customer service head U. Ananda Rani said domestic consumers increased their electricity usage from the onset of the MCO in March until June. “We have about 700,000 consumers in Penang, of which 540,000 are domestic users with the balance being industrial and commercial users.“In contrast, commercial and industrial usage fell between 30% and 50%, ” she said.

Ananda Rani said that a certain percentage of the drop in commercial and industrial usage was because people were working from home. She added that the larger issue involved companies and outlets cutting cost by shutting down power while some companies folded and others opened for only a few days a week during the MCO.“Consumers were continuously using their air-conditioners and fans.“As such, an increase in usage will have a direct effect on your monthly bills.Ananda Rani, however, said people were more aware now about this problem and there could be a different trend during the conditional MCO period which ends this Sunday.
